The award for the best research center at King Abdulaziz University is an extension of the march of excellence and creativity in a pioneering national scientific program. The award aims to develop the energies and creative research talents of faculty members and researchers at the university by virtue of its impact on the development of scientific research and innovation, which are two vital elements in achieving the Kingdom's goals as outlined in the Vision 2030 development program. The nomination for the award is based on the annual outputs of the centers according to the criteria for selection stipulated in the following rules.

Award Branches

The first branch:Award for the best center in scientific production and innovation

This award is granted to a center with a distinguished scientific career represented in the quality of scientific research, innovations, patents granted, and licensed technologies, provided that these works have an added scientific as well as practical value. This award is given to two centers, one being a well-established center (established more than three years prior) and the other from emerging centers (established during the past three years).

The second branch: Award for the center with best societal impact

This award is given to a center that has a high impact outside the university and whose influence is felt in solutions of technical problems that meet the needs of the community, in professional advice to local authorities, in initiatives and contributions with an impact at the national level, and/or in effective partnerships with community institutions. An additional consideration is the center's ability to obtain external funding for research, whether from the public or private sector.

Prize money

Financial reward for each branch:

  • (30,000) Thirty thousand Saudi riyals.
  • The financial return of the prize is distributed to the center’s employees as a reward of distinction.
  • A certificate of appreciation and a shield from the university president.
  • Announcement of the winners through local and university media channels (university magazines, university news, electronic screens, and the university's website on the Internet).

Award Goals
  1. Highlighting the distinguished competencies of research centers at King Abdulaziz University.
  2. Encouraging positive competition between research centers to achieve innovation in research performance.
  3. 3Showing appreciation for the efforts of distinguished research centers in research and for their qualitative scientific achievements in specific fields of national importance and in the strategic dimension.
  4. Encouraging research centers to cooperate in fields of qualitative research and in providing advice to relevant authorities and institutions.
  5. Realizing the university's mission and goals and their reflection in scientific research plans and programs.
  6. Advance the university to higher levels of research excellence so that it is among the ranks of distinguished research universities ranked internationally.
APPLY FOR A PRIZE
  1. Each research center at King Abdulaziz University has the right to nominate itself for the award through the Office of the Assistant Vice-President for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research for Center Affairs.
  2. The office submits to the University Awards Secretariat the names of the centers nominated for the award.
  3. A center loses its right to compete for the award and its application is not considered in any of the following cases:
    • If it is found that the center violates any of the conditions of the award.
    • If it is found that the center’s scientific production violates the rules of scientific honesty.
    • If the center is dissolved for any reason before the award is announced.
THE CONDITIONS

General conditions for applying for the award

  1. That the center be among the research centers and centers of excellence at the university.
  2. That the work considered was submitted during the year preceding the announcement of the award.
  3. That applications be submitted to the Assistant Vice President for Research Center Affairs of the Department of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research.
  4. That documents indicating the validity of the data be submitted, upon the request of the Office of the Assistant Vice-President for Research Center Affairs of the Department of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, within one week from the date of the request.
  5. That the center be evaluated considering its achievements for the year preceding the announcement of the award.

Special conditions for the award branches

The first branch: Award for the best center in scientific production and innovation

  1. Exception is made for scientific prizes that the researchers obtained from King Abdulaziz University.
  2. That licenses for discovery, innovation, or technology were given final approval in the year preceding the announcement of the award.
  3. King Abdulaziz University must share ownership of the discovery, innovation, or technology licensing.
  4. The works submitted must not have been awarded another prize previously.

The second branch: Award for the center with best societal impact

  1. Professional advice provided by the center to the local authorities in the field of the center's interests and specializations will be considered.
  2. That the creative initiatives and development projects carried out by the center contribute to achieving the university’s mission of community service, and that they contribute mainly directly to achieving the initiatives of the National Transformation Program.
  3. Any partnerships for the center should be in the area of its interests and priorities.
