A Guide to Research Centers

The King Fahd Medical Research Center is the premier research center of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It provides cooperative services to all health facilities and health colleges in the Kingdom. The center facilitates academic communication concerning all aspects of health and society according to the priorities and interests of the community. The center's research generally focuses on cancer research, hematology research, infectious diseases research, neuroscience research, nutritional and natural product research, biostatistics, and biotechnology. The King Fahd Medical Research Center also provides educational services, seeking to share and develop knowledge according to the different stages of society. The center seeks to expand the range of facilities for students by organizing and encouraging conferences, corporate support events and awareness campaigns.

The Kingdom's Vision 2030 program strengthens the leading role of the Arabic language and makes Arab strategic depth one of the fundamental pillars upon which the program is based. The Kingdom's Vision 2030 is inspired by the importance of the Arabic language for the consolidation of national cohesion and the development of a community identity that supports bonds of interconnectedness between social groups, thus forming a frame of reference that unifies and consolidates Arab depth, takes root in its empowerment and strengthens by its spirit the bonds between its sons whose speech is a clear Arabic tongue. On account of this it is necessary for educational institutions and research centers to respond to this circumstance by harmonizing their efforts with this national aspiration, and thus to accord special importance to the Arabic language and the strengthening of its strategic position. The center gives full support to the efforts of King Abdulaziz University in service of the Arabic language, with the aim of directing research competencies to issues of priority for the Arabic language in service to the community, and supporting such competencies intellectually and financially to advance the linguistic dispositive.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing a tremendous scientific and educational renaissance in various fields, including the fields of the social sciences and the humanities. The Kingdom's comprehensive and ambitious Vision 2030 program reinforces the importance of the social, psychological and human aspects of society, stating the following: "The happiness of citizens and residents is our top priority. Yet their happiness does not come about without the fulness of their physical, psychological and social health, and herein lies the importance of our vision to build a society whose members enjoy a healthy way of life, and whose surroundings allow them to live in a positive and attractive environment." Hence the need to establish this center in the field of social and human research, in order to contribute to providing scientific proposals and applied solutions both to promote development and to address negative social problems and phenomena, in order to limit their spread and mitigate their effects. The center also works to anticipate the future (prediction), to understand potential social changes and their impact on society and to provide information and strategies to the relevant authorities so that they will be able to monitor such potential changes in order to prevent them or to face their expected effects.

The problem of the shortage of water resources on the international scene is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity during the twenty-first century. The decision-makers in the world's governments must pay attention to this major problem and provide alternative solutions and strong guarantees of security for social and economic development in this vital and essential field. Hence, the need to establish this center, accomplished on 4/20/1418 AH, with the aim of providing scientific initiatives to solve the problem of water shortage at the local, national, regional and international levels through innovative research, consultation, training, transfer and localization of technology and knowledge dissemination.

King Abdulaziz University, in line with global trends and as part of its ambitious efforts to occupy the meritorious scientific position at the university of the founder al-Bani, may God have mercy on him, adopted the idea of establishing a center specializing in nanotechnology in 1428 AH. The center aims to develop nanotechnologies and transfer them from the laboratory space to the world of economic products, to serve sustainable development, to promote ambitious scientific research in the fields of nanotechnology, to strengthen professional links between universities and the world of industry in the Kingdom and to provide an environment that stimulates creativity, technical innovation and scientific advancement for specialists and those interested in nanoscale fields.

The Center of Innovation in Personalized Medicine was established with the aim of contributing to the development of the concept of personalized medicine in the health system of the Kingdom. Personalized medicine increases the efficiency of treatments provided to patients, reducing the number of citizens with illnesses, and thus speeding up patients’ rapid return to their jobs and work. The center, in cooperation with its commercial partners, contributes to the qualitative development of the research base in the Kingdom by providing the expertise and tools necessary for carrying out advanced research, which in turn will lead to the advancement of university education and the spread of a love for research and development among future graduates.

The Geohazards Research Center was established at King Abdulaziz University as a leading research center for studying geological hazards in the Kingdom. The center conducts high-quality applied research on the subject of geological hazards in the Kingdom, and aims also to help raise awareness of the different types of geological hazards and how to manage such hazards and mitigate their effects by means of scientific studies, consultations, programs and training seminars provided to relevant stakeholders.

The Center for Research Excellence in Genomic Medicine Research was established with the aim of conducting fundamental and applied research conforming to international standards with a view to combatting common genetic and cancerous diseases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The center also aims to address critical health issues at the genetic, protein and sub-genetic levels. The center recently launched an important research program in the field of pharmacogenomics and drug discovery to study the effect of genetic changes on the effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs in the population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and also to discover new anti-cancer and antimicrobial drugs to provide for unique and unprecedented needs.

The Center for Research Excellence for Advanced Materials Research was established with the aim of promoting excellence in the study of advanced materials, considered as both science and technology, in programs of both research and education. The center is involved with major issues that have a direct impact on society by virtue of its conducting advanced research in technological areas of importance to the Kingdom and the world, its applying research and research results to the solution of real problems facing the Kingdom, and its facilitating the transfer of technology to industry in order to support the national industry in competition in the global market.

The Center for Research Excellence for Research in Micro Sciences aims to develop a multidisciplinary academic partnership to promote sustainability, innovation and business development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through a unique approach to research and development in the fields of environment, agriculture, healthcare, and sustainability. The center focuses on fulfilling the potential of local resources and on providing advanced vital solutions in light of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Vision 2030 program.

The Center for Research Excellence in Desalination Technology encourages and develops various desalination technologies and areas of water treatment in order to enhance the economics of water desalination. The center also aims to transfer and develop desalination technologies within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to prepare highly qualified researchers who are able to invent new technologies, and to implement high-quality training programs.

The Center for Research Excellence in Trauma & Accidents was established in conjunction with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 program and its objectives. This center meets the need for active research centers concerned with reducing injuries and accidents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It likewise meets the urgent need to develop advanced research methods and to train staff for hospitals in various cities in the Kingdom who are qualified to deal with accidental emergency cases. This center aims to lead in clinical research and education concerning trauma and accidents in the region.

The Center for Research Excellence for Climate Change Research was established to achieve the status of global leader in climate change studies in a direction that is in line with and in support of international studies in this field on account of the field’s importance at the national, regional and global levels. The center aims to study climate changes and their potential repercussions on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and to create solutions that meet the needs of society and decision-makers.

The Center for Research Excellence in Intelligent Engineering Systems was established at King Abdulaziz University by the decision of the President of the University No. 7082 / s, dated 4/5/1435 AH, with the aim of obtaining expertise from various colleges and departments of the university for the purpose of realizing the potential of smart engineering systems in real life. The center pursues research and development of innovative projects needed by multiple clients, producing research publications, generating patents, and training human resources in support of long-term research and development activities in innovative technologies at the center and elsewhere in the Kingdom.

The Center for Research Excellence in Renewable Energy and Power Systems was established in the field of renewable energy and electric power systems as a high-quality national, regional, and international research community. The Center seeks to develop innovative technologies to ensure sustainable energy savings by supporting research programs at King Abdul Al-Aziz in the field of renewable energy and electric power systems that seek to find technical and procedural solutions to meet the country's future energy needs.

The Princess Al-Jawhara Center for Research Excellence in Research of Hereditary Disorders was established with the generous support of Her Highness Princess Al-Jawhara Bint Ibrahim Al-Ibrahim (may God protect her and care for her) as the first integrated center for hereditary diseases in the Kingdom. The center is characterized by comprehensiveness in that it comprises both distinguished research efforts in this field and the training of Saudi cadres in various skills related to those genetic research efforts and related health care methods, as well as efforts to limit the spread of these diseases, in addition to caring for patients and their families. The Center aims to study the causes of the spread of genetic diseases in the Kingdom and to limit their spread.

The Center of Excellence for Research in Environmental Studies at King Abdul Aziz University is concerned with research into air, water, and solid waste pollution. The center was established with support and funding from the Ministry of Higher Education as part of the Research Excellence Centers Initiative. The center aspires to contribute to achieving sustainable development by means of environmental research and studies of air and water pollution and solid waste treatment, providing laboratory services of international quality, and contributing to community service according to a civilized vision.

The Center of Excellence for Smart Environment was established in March 2018 in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its goal is to contribute to the future prosperity of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through research that harnesses technology and capacity building to create solutions to the challenges of the times, improve quality of life and construct a vibrant ecosystem.

The Center for Excellence in Biotechnology Research was established with the ambition to be a research center at the highest level relative to its counterparts locally and internationally by contributing to the development of serious scientific research in various fields of biotechnology. The center aims to provide excellent scientific results through the advancement of creative research that serves the community, to create a stimulating environment for serious scientific research, to conduct distinguished training courses in various fields of biotechnology, to provide job opportunities for scholars of excellence and to train them in the use of the latest scientific technologies, and to create innovative solutions to the problems of industry, agriculture, environment and specialized health, in addition to pursuing close cooperation with all sectors of the university and outside it by means of excellent and promising research.

The Center for Research Excellence for Drug Research and Pharmaceutical Industries was established in 2019 as the first center for drug research and pharmaceutical industries within the university and indeed in any Saudi university. The center aims to develop drugs through partnerships with academia, industry, government and institutions, and provides expertise and specialized infrastructure to identify and develop promising drugs, discoveries and pharmaceutical industrial techniques, aiming to turn these into commercially viable investment opportunities for the private sector and ultimately into new drugs for patients.

The Pediatric Cardiac Center for Research Excellence PCCE was established with the aim of providing medical care to all children with heart diseases. The center includes the most important and modern medical devices that are unavailable in most pediatric cardiology centers, such as ECMO devices, which perform the functions of the heart and lungs even if the heart stops or blood pressure drops to a critical level, helping the patient to stay alive until the procedure appropriate for the situation can be carried out, whether by catheter or surgery. The center aims to raise the average number of open-heart surgeries for children from 80 to 120 annually, with the best quality and control standards, and receives more than 2000 children’s heart cases annually through outpatient clinics

The Pediatric Nephrology Center of Excellence was established with the aim of providing the best health care for children suffering from kidney diseases. The center includes a dedicated treatment space with a capacity of 12 beds, in addition to a headquarters for the center’s proton dialysis clinics, comprising 4 clinics and two daily inpatient rooms, as well as 8 beds for hemodialysis and a headquarters for the management of the center that consists of 3 administrative rooms.

This center was established with the support of businessman Mr. Muhammad Hussein Al-Amoudi, on the basis of an idea from breast cancer survivor Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi. The center aims to propagate the culture and mechanisms of early examination, and to provide excellent services for breast cancer patients and their families through the whole cycle of health, social and psychological care, with attention to the medical and cultural research aspects of breast cancer treatment.

The Felthat Center for Research Excellence in Children's Emergency seeks to be one of the leading centers in treating children's emergencies in the region and the Kingdom by providing distinguished, integrated, and pioneering services to the largest possible segment of patients. The center is also keen to realize community partnerships between the university, donor institutions, charities, and supporters for the purpose of establishing an integrated unit that includes recovery rooms, rapid surgery rooms, intensive care, radiology, and integrated facilities. This will help to double the number of patients benefiting from the unit. Moreover, the center aspires to establish a postgraduate program (fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine), to train Saudi medical personnel in the fields of pediatric emergency medicine and nursing, to develop scientific research in subspecialties, and to encourage volunteer participation in the center for all distinguished staff.

The Translation and Arabization Center was established by the President of the University, Decision No. 3182/ق, dated 10/3/1441AD. The center works to achieve the Kingdom’s vision by strengthening the university’s role in transferring, indigenizing, and benefiting from science and knowledge and by highlighting the status of the Arabic language and realizing its role in global civilization. The process of translation has become the compass that determines the direction of the progress of nations and the extent to which they keep pace with scientific development and progress.

The Training Center and the prevention of radiation aims to cooperate with responsible authorities to supervise the implementation of their instructions regarding radiation protection, to raise the efficiency of workers in this field, to advance both scientific and practical studies and research in the field of radiation protection, to provide services in the field of radiation safety training, and to prepare and qualify workers in the field of radiation protection and radiation measurement through the preparation and implementation of short and long-term theoretical and practical programs. Also, it aims at participation and advancement in the development of radiation and nuclear emergency plans at the university level and its sectors and making predictions in a consistent manner. Moreover, it aims to prevent, control, and reduce the consequences of radiological accidents, to develop programs, systems, and monitoring and technical mechanisms to maintain the security of radiological sources within the various sectors of the university, to secure such sources, and to seek out expertise in the field. The center also aims to carry out periodic surveys of workplaces handling radioactive materials, radiological sources, and devices that emit radiation, to conduct radiological analysis to ensure the safety of workers and the environment, and to measure personal doses of radiation taken by workers with radioactive materials and radiation-emitting devices in all sectors of the university.
